jinion

Troubleshooting

Fixes for common problems, and how to record a debug log with --debug.

jinion: command not found

npm installed Jinion in a folder that isn't on your PATH. Find the folder:

Terminal
npm prefix -g

Add its bin folder to your PATH in your shell profile, such as ~/.zshrc, then open a new terminal:

Terminal
export PATH="$(npm prefix -g)/bin:$PATH"

jinion --version should print the version now.

You aren't signed in to Claude

Open /account, go to the account that says "Not signed in" and press enter. Jinion opens the sign-in in your browser; paste the code the browser shows. To sign an account in again, such as after its login expired, press l on it.

The rule under the prompt shows Manual instead of Auto

Auto mode needs a model that supports it, such as Opus or Sonnet. Switch with /model; the project keeps Auto, and it applies again with a supported model.

Colors are hard to read

Jinion guessed your terminal's background wrong. Set it yourself:

Terminal
jinion --theme dark

To keep it, add export JINION_THEME=dark to your shell profile.

No notifications show up

  • Check that your terminal supports them; see Get notified.
  • Notifications only come while the window isn't focused.
  • Inside tmux or screen, they become the bell. tmux also needs focus-events on; see Use Jinion inside tmux.
  • Check that they're on: /notifications on.

Pasting an image does nothing

  • On Linux, install wl-paste (Wayland) or xclip (X11).
  • Outside macOS, images over 3.7 MB are refused. Drag a smaller file in instead.

shift+enter sends the message

Your terminal sends the same key for shift+enter and enter. Use alt+enter, or end the line with \.

I can't select text

Drag to select; Jinion copies the text when you let go. If the wheel and clicks do nothing either, your terminal isn't sending mouse events: in iTerm2, turn on Settings → Profiles → Terminal → Enable mouse reporting.

Selected text doesn't reach the clipboard

Over SSH, Jinion copies through your terminal (OSC 52). In iTerm2, turn on Settings → General → Selection → Applications in terminal may access clipboard. On Linux, install wl-copy, xclip or xsel. For your terminal's own selection, hold shift while you drag (option in iTerm2).

An MCP server shows as failed

Open /mcp and go to the server: its error shows below the list. Servers from a project's .mcp.json stay off until you turn them on there. A claude.ai connector that shows "not signed in" connects in your claude.ai settings.

Record a debug log

When something goes wrong and you want to report it, run the session again with --debug:

Terminal
jinion --debug

Jinion writes what it sends to the model and what comes back to ~/.jinion/logs/<time>.jsonl, one JSON line per record, and prints the path when you quit.

The log holds your prompts, the agent's replies and the code it read. Read it before you share it.

Get help

Open an issue on GitHub with what you did, what you expected, and what happened. Attach a debug log if you can.
